The New Library
Most of you have already seen the newly dedicated Fr. John Meyendorff Memorial Library housed in one of the newly built Sunday School classrooms. The library named after one of Orthodox Christianity’s greatest church historians, patrologists and ecumenists of the 20th century, the former dean of St. Vladimir Orthodox Theological Seminary and author of more than two dozen books and scores of articles.
The library now contains nearly 1,100 volumes and while not comprehensive by any means, it is extensive containing works dealing with scriptural exegesis, hagiography, icons, patristics, theology, church history, spirituality, history of Byzantium, church art and architecture, liturgical studies, service books, canon law, crusades, monasticism, history of Russia, Armenia, Georgia and Middle East, and the papacy.
Presently there are three card catalogs: one by title, one by author and the third by subject heading. Soon, we hope, to have a standard library card catalog cabinet to house the entire card catalog.
When the library is open, you are invited to browse the collection. Should you wish to borrow a title, please remove the loan card from the back inside jacket, write your name and date on the loan card and place the card in the small black box labeled “borrowed”.
Rules for borrowing and library use are as follows:
Ø All adult parishioners of SS. Peter & Paul and all clergy from any church, synagogue or mosque in the greater Binghamton area may borrow a book for the period of one month (not renewable).
Ø Borrowers from within the parish should removed the load card from the back inside cover of the book and fill out name and date and place it in the “borrowed” box
Ø clergy from outside the parish should do the same and fill out the sign out sheet giving name, religious affiliation, address and telephone number.
Ø A maximum of three titles may be borrowed simultaneously.
Ø Reference works so marked must be consulted on site.
Ø DVDs may be borrowed for a period of one week.
Ø Return all borrowed items to the conference table; do not attempt to reshelf the item yourself.
Ø No food or drink permitted in the library
The Meyendorff library will accept in kind gifts of books after review by the librarian. Titles that will be accepted must conform to library acquisitions policy and to the fields mentioned in paragraph two. Because of space limitations we cannot accept duplicates and titles outside our collecting interests.
You have a new library now. Take advantage of it.
